Demystifying the intake process, so you know what to expect

If you’ve never been to therapy, the idea of a first session can feel intimidating — will you have to relive painful memories right away? Will you be judged? In reality, first sessions are far more structured and far less intense than most people expect.

The Purpose of the First Session

A first session, often called an intake, is primarily about gathering information and building an initial sense of rapport — not diving into deep processing work. I’ll ask about what brought you to therapy, relevant history, current stressors and supports, and what you’re hoping treatment will look like.

What You Can Expect to Discuss

• What prompted you to seek therapy now

• Relevant history — family, relationships, past treatment, medical background

• Current symptoms, stressors, and coping strategies

• Your goals and what ‘better’ would look like for you

• Logistics: session frequency, format, and approach

You Won’t Be Rushed into Deep Work

Especially for trauma-focused modalities like EMDR or heart-centered hypnotherapy, the first several sessions typically focus on stabilization and building internal resources before any reprocessing work begins. This isn’t a delay tactic — it’s a clinical necessity, ensuring your nervous system has enough support to process difficult material safely.

The first session isn’t a test. It’s a conversation to see if this is the right place for you to do your work.

It’s Okay to Ask Questions Too

A first session is a two-way evaluation. You’re welcome to ask about my approach, experience with your specific concern, and what a realistic treatment timeline might look like. Therapy works best when it’s a collaborative fit, not a one-directional evaluation of you.

After the First Session

Following the intake, we’ll typically outline a loose treatment plan together — which modalities make sense, how often to meet, and what early goals look like. This plan isn’t fixed; it evolves as we learn more about what’s most effective for you.
